A Gentle Hand and a Patient Heart: How We Help Nervous Pets Feel Safe at Our Marana Vet Clinic

The car ride starts, and you feel it instantly. The low whine from the back seat, the trembling that starts in their paws and works its way through their whole body. Or maybe it’s the moment the cat carrier appears, and your usually social feline vanishes into thin air, only to be found hiding in the deepest, darkest corner of your closet. As a pet owner, there is nothing harder than seeing your beloved companion consumed by fear, especially when you’re just trying to get them the care they need.

If this sounds familiar, please know this: you are not alone, and your pet is not “bad.”

Veterinary anxiety is a real and common challenge. At Tangerine Pet Clinic, we’ve built our entire practice around understanding and easing that fear. We believe that compassionate, patient care isn’t an add-on; it’s the only way to practice good medicine. We are a local, independent Marana vet clinic, and our promise is to be a true partner in your pet’s health—and that partnership begins with trust.

Understanding Veterinary Anxiety: Why Pets Get Nervous
For our pets, a visit to the vet is a sensory overload. Imagine their experience: a car ride that often only leads to this one specific place, a building filled with the unfamiliar smells of other animals and strange cleaning supplies, slippery floors that offer no grip, and new people wanting to touch and handle them in sensitive areas.
This experience can trigger a fight-or-flight response, which can look like:
  • Shaking or Trembling: A visible sign of adrenaline and fear.
  • Hiding: Seeking refuge in their carrier, under a chair, or behind their owner.
  • Vocalizing: Excessive whining, growling, hissing, or meowing.
  • Aggression: Nipping, scratching, or lunging out of fear, not malice.
  • Refusing Treats: A sign that their anxiety is too high to even consider food.
These are not signs of a disobedient pet; they are the signs of a scared one. Recognizing this is the first step toward changing the experience for the better.

What We Do Differently at Tangerine Pet Clinic
Our commitment to your pet’s emotional well-being is woven into everything we do. We are a Fear-Free inspired practice, which is a science-based approach to veterinary care that seeks to actively reduce anxiety. It’s not just a philosophy; it’s a series of deliberate actions you’ll see from the moment you walk through our door.

A Team That Understands:
Our team is the heart of our promise. Dr. Michele Estheimer founded Tangerine Pet Clinic with the dream of creating a unique, positive veterinary experience in the Marana community she calls home. This vision is shared by every member of our staff, like our team member Maxx. With six years of experience that began in shelter medicine, Maxx has a profound understanding of animals at their most vulnerable. She learned to read the subtle language of fear, earn the trust of wary animals, and develop a calm confidence that soothes anxious spirits. This deep well of empathy is what every pet deserves.

A Calmer, Quieter Environment:
We’ve designed our clinic to be a peaceful space. You won’t find chaotic, overcrowded waiting rooms here. We manage our schedule to ensure a calm atmosphere, use soothing color palettes, and utilize species-specific pheromones to promote a sense of security. For our feline patients, we provide quiet, private spaces away from the sight and sound of dogs to minimize their stress.

A Gentler Approach to Handling:
Our team is trained in low-stress handling techniques. This means:
  • Longer Appointment Windows: We don’t rush. We offer longer appointment times to give your pet the space they need to acclimate at their own pace without feeling pressured.
  • Minimal and Gentle Restraint: We use soft voices and avoid heavy restraint whenever possible. We let your pet’s comfort guide us.
  • Comfort-Led Exams: We use non-slip surfaces on our floors and tables. If your dog feels safer being examined on the floor, that’s where we’ll be.
  • Treats as Tools: We use high-value treats and toys not as a bribe, but as a way to build positive associations and turn a stressful event into a rewarding one.

Small Changes That Make a Big Impact: How You Can Help
Your partnership is crucial to a successful, low-stress visit. Here are a few things you can do at home to help prepare your nervous pet:
  • Make the Carrier a Friend: For cats and small dogs, leave the carrier out in your home for several days before the visit. Place a favorite blanket, toys, or treats inside to turn it into a safe, comfortable den rather than a scary box.
  • Come Hungry: If it’s medically appropriate, skip the meal right before their appointment. A hungry pet is more interested in the delicious, high-value treats we use to build trust and create a positive experience.
  • Consider Calming Aids: Pheromone sprays like Feliway for cats or Adaptil for dogs can be sprayed on a blanket or bandana 15-20 minutes before leaving home to help ease travel anxiety.
  • Talk to Us About Medication: For pets with severe anxiety, a pre-visit anti-anxiety medication can make a world of difference. It doesn’t sedate them; it simply lowers their anxiety enough to make the visit tolerable and even positive. If you think this could help your pet, please call us to discuss options in advance.

You’re Not Alone—We’re Here to Help
Loving a pet with anxiety can be isolating, but you don’t have to manage it by yourself. At Tangerine Pet Clinic, we see your pet’s fear, and we meet it with patience, expertise, and compassion. Our goal is for you to leave our clinic feeling relieved and for your pet to leave feeling better than when they arrived—both physically and emotionally.

If vet visits are hard for your pet, let us help. A simple test today can add years to your pet’s life, and a gentle approach can make that test possible.
