A Warm Welcome to Tangerine Pet Clinic: What to Expect at Your First Visit

Bringing a new dog or cat into your family, or moving to a new area like Marana, comes with a wonderful mix of joy and a list of to-dos. Right at the top of that list is finding a veterinary partner you can trust—a place where you and your pet feel seen, heard, and cared for. We know that first vet visit can feel daunting, filled with questions and uncertainty.
At Tangerine Pet Clinic, we've built our entire practice around honoring the promise you make to your pet. As a local, independent Marana vet clinic, we offer highly personalized, concierge care exclusively for dogs and cats. We believe a calm, Fear-Free inspired environment isn't a luxury—it's the foundation of better medicine. This is more than a clinic; it's our commitment to you and the animals that make your family whole.
Welcome. We're so glad you're here. Let's walk through what you can expect when you join our family.

Meet Your Partners in Pet Health
Great veterinary care starts with a great relationship. Before we even meet your pet, we want you to meet the people who will be their dedicated advocates.

Dr. Michele Estheimer: Our founder, Dr. Estheimer—or Dr. E, as she's affectionately known—isn't just a veterinarian in Marana; she's a product of this community. She grew up here, attended Mountain View High School, and is a proud graduate of the University of Arizona. After receiving her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and completing advanced training, her dream was to return to her roots and create a unique veterinary experience for the community she calls home. Her passion is building lasting partnerships with pet owners to ensure a lifetime of health.

Maxx, Veterinary Team Member: A great clinic is powered by an empathetic and experienced team, and Maxx is the heart and soul of that promise. With a background in the high-stakes world of shelter medicine, Maxx brings a unique depth of understanding to our clinic. She has a gift for reading the subtle language of an anxious animal and knows how to earn the trust of a pet who may have had a rough start in life. Her calm confidence and gentle approach are invaluable, especially for rescue pets or those who find new situations stressful. When Maxx is part of your pet's care team, you can be sure they are in the hands of a true animal advocate.

Our Fear-Free Philosophy in ActionWe understand that for many pets, a vet visit is a source of fear. Our commitment to a Fear-Free inspired philosophy is about actively working to reduce and eliminate that anxiety, transforming the visit from a stressful event into a positive one.

This isn't just a buzzword; it's a science-based approach you'll see in everything we do :
  • A Calming Environment: From the moment you walk in, you'll notice our clinic feels different. We use a soothing color palette and species-specific calming pheromones to help lower stress levels naturally.
  • Respecting Your Pet's Pace: Our team is trained to avoid actions that pets can find threatening, like direct eye contact or looming over them. We give your pet the space and time they need to acclimate at their own pace.
  • Comfort is Key: We use non-slip surfaces on our floors and exam tables so your pet feels stable and secure. If your dog is more comfortable on the floor, that's where we'll conduct the exam. For our feline friends, we provide quiet, private spaces away from the sight and sound of dogs to minimize their anxiety.
  • Positive Reinforcement: We use treats, toys, and gentle handling not as tricks, but as essential tools to build trust and create positive associations with their visit.

Preparing for a Smooth First Visit: Your ChecklistA little preparation can make a world of difference. To help us get a complete picture of your pet's health and make the visit as smooth as possible, please bring the following items with you.

What to Bring:
  • Previous Medical Records: If you have them, please bring any records from your previous veterinarian, breeder, or shelter. This includes vaccination history, previous lab work, and notes on any past illnesses or surgeries. If you don't have physical copies, just provide us with the name and phone number of the previous clinic, and we'll be happy to call and request the records for you.
  • A List of Medications & Supplements: Bring a list (or photos) of everything your pet currently takes, including prescription medications, vitamins, supplements, and flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives.
  • Diet Information: Jot down the brand and type of food and treats your pet eats, and roughly how much you feed them each day. Nutrition is a cornerstone of health, and this information is incredibly helpful.
  • A Fresh Stool Sample: We recommend annual parasite testing. Please bring a fresh (less than 24 hours old) stool sample in a clean, sealed container or bag.
  • Your Questions: We encourage you to write down any questions or concerns you have. This is your time, and we want to ensure we address everything on your mind.

Tips for Our Anxious Friends:
If your pet gets nervous about car rides or new places, you're not alone. Here are a few tips to help ease their anxiety:
  • Acclimate to the Carrier: For cats and small dogs, leave the carrier out in your home for several days before the appointment. Make it a comfortable, safe space by placing a favorite blanket, toys, or treats inside.
  • Bring Them Hungry: If it's medically appropriate for your pet, skip the meal right before their appointment. A hungry pet is more receptive to the high-value treats we use to make the visit a positive experience.
  • Pack Their Favorites: Bring a small bag of their most-loved treats or a favorite toy. These familiar items can provide comfort and a welcome distraction.
  • Stay Calm Yourself: Your pet can sense your emotions. By staying calm and positive, you send a powerful signal to them that they are in a safe place.

Step-by-Step: Your First Appointment
Our concierge approach means we've designed the first visit to be thorough, unhurried, and focused on building a partnership with you.
  1. Arrival & Welcome: When you arrive, you'll be greeted by our friendly staff in our calm waiting area. We work hard to manage our schedule to minimize wait times and ensure the environment remains peaceful.
  2. The Exam Room Experience: Once in the private exam room, we'll start by simply talking with you. We want to hear your story and learn about your pet's personality, history, and daily routines. Then, Dr. Estheimer will perform a comprehensive "nose-to-tail" physical examination. She will check your pet's eyes, ears, teeth, and gums; listen to their heart and lungs; palpate their abdomen; and assess their skin, coat, and joints. Throughout the exam, we'll explain what we're doing and what we're observing.

  3. Building Your Pet's Health Plan: The exam is the foundation for creating a personalized, proactive health plan. This is a collaborative process where we discuss our recommendations and create a plan that works for you and your pet. This will typically include:
    • Vaccinations: We'll review your pet's history and lifestyle to create a tailored vaccination plan to protect them from preventable diseases.
    • Parasite Prevention: Living in Marana means year-round protection against fleas, ticks, and heartworms is essential. We'll discuss the best options for your pet.
    • Nutrition Care: We'll provide personalized nutritional counseling and assess your pet's oral health, offering guidance for at-home care and professional cleanings if needed.
    • Wellness Screenings: Depending on your pet's age and breed, we may recommend baseline blood work or other diagnostic tests to screen for common conditions and establish a healthy baseline for future comparison.
